"Your Majesty!" Günther exclaimed as he opened the office door. His face was flustered and he was flailing all over the place as he approached to Yuuri holding up a bunch of papers. "This is serious!" he said, which obviously meant it wasn't.

There was a wide range of things that would put Günther that way, and none of them would be something important. Nevertheless, Conrad was curious about what it was this time, so he took a peek from Yuuri's shoulder as the young king read the documents his advisor had given him.

On the first sheet of paper alone, there was as follows:

Project name: Automatic Horse Washing Machine (Horse-washer-kun)

Purpose: This will help to reduce the work load in the stables by automatically washing and brushing all horses at the same time by means of use of maryoku.

Justification: Besides being living creatures that, as such, deserve all respect, horses are an important asset in Shin Makoku and they should be handled with proper care and attention, but the stable boys are important as well and steps should be taken to help them reduce the health problems that are part of the job.

"...oh, my," Conrad muttered.

"Where did you get these?" Yuuri asked.

"Dorcas found them on the garden," Günther said. "Apparently she forgot them when when she was working outside. But, Your Majesty, we must prevent this from happening!"

Yuuri sighed. "I guess it would be for the best, but how do we do that?"

That was a most valid question: Lady Anissina von Karbelnikoff wasn't going to allow just about anyone to get in the way between her and progress, not even her king. Of course, it didn't help that said king was rather lenient because he both admired her and was terrified of her. And, well, Anissina could be quite terrifying; if any doubt persisted, one just had to ask Gwendal.

"Pass a ban, Your Highness!" Günther suggested.

"A ban? Wouldn't that be too harsh?" Yuuri said.

There you go, Conrad thought.

"We should just talk with her," Yuuri added.

Yes, that would absolutely help if Anissina were someone who would actually listen, which she wasn't.

Then again, this were the horses they were talking about: no one wanted to risk whatever contraption she was designing to blow up when near them. Nor when attached to them.

"If you excuse me," Conrad intervened, "I think I can provide an alternative."

Both Yuuri and Günther turned to him. As they listened to him, hope shined upon their eyes.

"What do you mean the horses aren't here?" Anissina said. There were at least half a dozen machines behind her.

"Well, yes," Conrad sail, all smiles, "they all seemed too tired and we thought they could use some vacations."

Anissina pressed the bridge of her nose. "But, the beach?"

Conrad's smile broadened as he raised his hands, palms forward. "It's a custom in His Majesty's world."

"It is?" Anissina sighed.

"Yes."

She sighed. "You've been there, after all."

Conrad nodded.

"Then, there's nothing I can do about this," she said.

The core of the plan was to remove the horses for long enough that she would forget about that project and bring them back when she was already testing something else on someone sturdier. Like Gwendal, for example. So far, it seemed to be working.

Yet, right then, a flock of bad-omen birds flew by.

"Except to say that it all went as smoothly as expected!" Anissina concluded.

Not from where Conrad was standing, it seemed.

"Ah?" he asked, his smile still fixed on his face.

Anissina folded her arms smugly. "I left those papers for Dorcas to found them, so they would take all the horses away and let me work on my real project."

Conrad had to admit that had been a smart move.

"And what would that be?" he said after a pause.

Anissina gestured toward her machines. "Stable-washer-kun. I needed the stables to be empty to test it."

Then why didn't you ask for it directly? Conrad thought, even though he knew that it was like everyone in this castle delighted themselves on complicating their lives now and then.

On the other hand, it was actually nice this was the worst kind of conspiracy going on within this court.

"I already sent someone to fetch Gwendal," Anissina said.

"I see," Conrad said starting to walk backwards. "Well, I'll be... around."

Anissina nodded and began to work. "Good."

Conrad left. On his way back to the main building he met his older brother walking towards his doom. They both greeted each other with a nod. For a second, Conrad thought it would be amusing if Gwendal would say something like "Morituri te salutant," whenever he found himself in these situations. Unfortunately, Gwendal didn't know the reference and Conrad just knew he wouldn't find it amusing at all.

After climbing a couple of floors, Conrad perched himself on a window from where he could see all the action on the stables. He hoped Yuuri, Wolfram and Günther were having as much fun on the beach as he was about to have.
