[Oban Star Racers] Just For This Moment

Fandom: Oban Star Racers
Wordcount: 450
Characters: Jordan C. Wilde, Molly (Eva Wei)
Pairing(s): Jordan -> Molly
Genre: Angst
Notes: ALL THE SPOILERS. Set several years after the end of the series.

Even the most powerful being in the galaxy can't stop time. The only thing he can do, he' has known this from the beginning, from the day he became aware of it---what a bitter day it was---is to be there when it happens, whatever the consequences. (Even if he can now dictate them; he has enough authority---although not the wish---to rewrite reality.)

After an instant, so brief when compared to all the time he has still ahead of him, he can feel it happening. There's a twitch in his heart. She's still there, after all. She never left, even when he let her go.

He's there, now, before he realized he'd wished it.

He's there, in front of the bed. He's happy it's a bed. He's happy it's now instead of, as he spent so much time fearing, long before, in a racing track amidst blood and twisted metal.

"I knew you'd come," she says. Her voice is weak. She's older. Her face is covered with wrinkles. But she's still the strong, stubborn woman with whom he fell in love.

He's not surprised she recognized him. After all, he looks exactly like he did the last time she saw him. He's been so busy in thousands of small things you haven't thought how he'd look like as an older man. He makes an effort to smile.

"I'm sorry I couldn't visit you before," he murmurs as he tries to keep is voice stable.

She waves her hand. "Don't worry about that. I understand." She opens her arms. "Come here."

He obeys and hugs her tight.

"I had a good life," she adds.

He nods against his chest. He knows it's true. He knows it because once in a while his eyes wondered away and he saw her going through life as fierce and determined as she was when she raced. He saw her growing up. He saw her surrounded by a family. He saw her happy. And now...

"I'm ready to go."

And now she won't be there when he looks. There will be only a huge void instead and... and he smiles. "Rest," he says. "You deserve it."

She smiles back. "You work hard. Be the best Avatar, and choose the next one wisely."

"I will. I promise."

He leans down to kiss her forehead just when she exhales for the last time.

He thought he was ready. That he had convinced himself that it was unavoidable. Yet, the breaking of his heart resounds in every solar system.

Then, he goes back to he center of the galaxy. To keep on working, and to pretend he doesn't dream of the life that never was.
