[The Dresden Files] Harry Dresden vs Ebooks
~560 words
G-Rated
Thomas didn't invite Harry to his apartment every day, and there was a good reason for it. Nevertheless, his little brother felt social from time to time and he invited himself. It wasn't that Thomas didn't appreciate the company, or that he didn't love Harry. It was just that... well, Harry's unannounced visits didn't leave Thomas much time to move his electronics to a safe location.
During one of such occasions, right after Thomas had made sure his iPod was safe, he noticed something behind the cushion on which Harry was going to sit down.
"Wait up!" he said, practically diving in and sort-of-but-not-really pushing Harry away. But only a little.
"What? What is it?" Harry said as he tried to recover his balance.
Thomas cradled the device against his chest. "It's my new electronic reader. I just bought it."
"Your what?"
"My electronic reader," Thomas replied stressing the words. Then, he realized Harry probably wouldn't know what he was talking about. It wouldn't hurt to explain. "You can read electronic books on it. Or could, if you weren't going to explode it."
"Electronic books?" Harry asked, somewhat shocked. "That's the new fad?"
Thomas went to place the gadget on a shelf far away from Harry. His aura was starting to get agitated. "It's not a fad, Harry. It's the future."
"The future? What do you mean 'the future'?"
Thomas shrugged. "Yes. Some people think e-books are going to replace the traditional books altogether."
"What? We've had centuries of putting knowledge on paper and now... now they want to make it virtual? Do you have any idea of the power that is possible to pour into a piece of paper?"
Thomas raised an eyebrow. "Harry?"
"That," Harry continued, "could never be replicated in a little gizmo like the one over there!" he looked at Thomas' electronic reader like if it had kicked Mouse back when he was a puppy. "There's also the issue of permanence to think about."
Thomas rubbed his forehead and let Harry to keep on with his rant for a little while. He lost track of the actual words, but he still was quite amused at his little brother's tirade. "Harry," he said, finally, "I'm sure old geezers like you are still going to hold on to traditional books until the end of times, and I said that some people think that, not everyone. Believe me, there's a hot debate about it out there."
"As it well should!"
"Besides," Thomas added trying not to smile too much. "You're not just throwing a tantrum because you can't use it, are you?"
"Of course not!" Harry said after a telling pause.
Thomas snickered. "Thought so."
There was another pause.
"I was going to sit down here, I think," Harry said suddenly.
A quick scan told Thomas there was nothing else in danger, so he nodded and gestured to Harry to do as he'd said. So he did it all too solemnly.
Thomas tried hard not to laugh again. "Beer?" he asked instead.
"Yes, please."
So Thomas went to the fridge to take out a couple.
The evening proceeded as usual, like if nothing had happened. Except for Thomas chuckling out of nowhere once in a while, but Harry quite graciously ignored him, which only made it worse.
Thomas really did love his little brother.
