laurus_nobilis: FMA - Al/Mei.
It was going to be a drabble, but it kept growing and growing. It only stopped at +1300 words. XD I hope you like it.
Al and Mei were sitting down in front of each other, just a table apart, in the library at the Elric's house. Al had Xiao Mei on his lap and was scratching her back absentmindedly, enjoying the feeling of the animal's soft fur under his fingers; Mei, on the other hand, couldn't care less for Al's cat, who was purring on a shelf somewhere in the back of the room, looking at the strangers as if he weren't sure they were worthy enough for him to get any closer.
After nearly five years since the last time Al and Mei had seen each other, she had come out of nowhere to the Elric's doorstep. She had arrived early in the morning, while Al was out buying groceries. She had talked to Ed who, in turn, told his brother, as soon as he got back, that whatever Mei wanted was up to him.
Next thing Al knew, Ed—smiling smugly, the bastard—saw fit to leave him and Mei all alone.
She had arrived with nothing but her—still—little black-and-white friend and a small bag, just like the first time she had come to Amestris. There was one big difference, though; she had grown up in those years, and she had done it quite nicely. She had been cute before, now she was very pretty.
Quite beautiful, Al thought.
He reprimanded himself at the instant; there'd be time to muse about that later. It was more important to find out why she had returned exactly. All she'd said so far was that she needed a refuge because she had been exiled from Xing.
Al went back to think a way to phrase his questions in a way that wouldn't strike as rude, but, after a moment, Mei started to speak on her own accord. “I was warned before it all began so I could leave,” she said. “But I didn't. They let me go. He let me go.”
“What began?” Al asked. “Who let you go?”
“It's an ancestral tradition in Xing that once one of the prince or princess secure their right to the throne they kill all the others,” she said. Her voice had some resignation in it, but it also left quite clear that she would've done the same if she had been crowned Empress.
Al's fingers stopped their movement and Xiao Mei raised her eyes to him. “I remember Ling saying something about it,” he said. “I thought it was cruel. I still think it's cruel.”
“I understand that to your eyes it may seem so, but it is the only way for the Empire to remain in peace.” Al opened his mouth to reply, but she promptly added, “Either way, nothing can be done now; it's over. They're all dead. They're all dead but me.” It was almost as if she regretted it.
Al didn't know what to say, so he just muttered the obvious. “You managed to get away.”
“Aren't you listening? I just told you that he spared me! He exiled me! He dared to change the customs!”
Al raised his hands and waved them to calm her down while Xiao Mei looked from him to her mistress. “Who's he?”Al asked once Mei had composed herself.
Mei sighed. “Are you really this daft or the news hadn't gotten here yet? Ling Yao won; he'll be crowned Emperor soon.”
Al felt like slapping himself for not having thought of that as soon as Mei had began her story.
Of course Ling would be the one to spare her life, after all they had been through together. They had gotten to know each other to the point that at the end they acted as the brother and sister they were, which meant that in their fights they only pretended they wanted to kill each other and Lan Fan didn't intervene anymore.
On the other hand, that also meant Ling had ordered to kill—or had killed himself—all of his others brothers and sisters. The idea made Al feel depressed. How could you do that to your own flesh and blood? Even if they ony shared one parent, it had to account to something. It had to be devastating.
Xiao Mei climbed to his neck and hugged Al's ear.
“He told me to come here and look for you,” Mei continued. “He said that you would take care of me.” She stared at him, all doe-eyed, the sight of which made Al come back to reality and made him feel very awkward.
He cleared his throat. “I—I will,” he managed.
“I don't plan to be a burden. I'll clean and cook and—”
“Wait, wait! You don't have to do any of that!”
“I told you I won't be a burden!”
“Yes, I know, but you don't have to clean anything; we have a maid.”
“Oh.”
Mei sounded so disappointed that Al hurried to say, “You could start some business, though, like selling some of the medicinal plants you know so much about! And you could even pay us rent!”
That made Mei's eyes shine and Al felt relieved and scared at the same time.
“Great then!” she said. “So, where are Xiao Mei and I going to sleep?”
Al scratched his chin. “Well, there's a spare room, but brother has it full with all sort of things, which leaves...” He reached a conclusion and winced; he'd have to phrase this very delicately. “Listen, while we clean the spare room, I'll sleep in the couch and you and Xiao Mei can take my room.”
Mei blushed and covered her mouth with her hands. “I couldn't do that! Not when you're being so nice with me!”
Al smiled broadly. “I don't mind,” he said, shrugging, and he added, matter-of-factly, “Unless you want to—” (Al barely managed to dodge the kick and barricade himself behind his chair before he finished the phrase) “—take the couch! To take the couch!”
At some point, Xiao Mei had jumped down to the floor and now she was hissing at him.
Red-faced, Mei was glaring at him; it was a terrifying glare, but a lovely one, as terrifying glares went. After a few seconds, she gave him her back. “I think I' m going to take the room,” she said. “And I will lock the door!” she added as she closed the one in the study.
Two seconds later, Al sighed and left himself fall to the floor. He was thankful; it could've been a lot worse.
The cat chose that moment to rub himself against Al's back, as if he was thanking his master for an interesting show.
The door opened again and Ed's head peek through it. “Hey! She really likes you!” he said, still with that smug smile of his. “She didn't kill you after all!”
“Shut up, brother!”
Ed left, laughing deviously and softly after saying Al should begin his quest for forgiveness right that moment if he ever wanted to get somewhere with Mei.
Al decided to let his brother go away unscathed—for the moment. Vengeance was a dish best served cold, or so they said.
On the meantime, he had to take care of Mei, as he had promised. For that, he needed to regain her trust, which did involve to get her to forgive what she'd thought he was going to say.
He got up from the floor wondering if flowers would make things better or worse, and then he remembered that all of his money was in his room, the one that was, no doubt, already out of bounds for him.
Planning how to borrow the money from Ed without his older brother mocking him even more, Al realized that he was at the edge of very interesting—and great—times.
Pero el hecho permanece ¡y le mando muchas, muchas gracias! =D

I . love. this. Much, much love to Almei --they are sooo cute. Adorable, and just... aaah, I hope Arakawa has them end up together. I'm glad you didn't make her the doormat for Al a lot of people make her out to be, because hell, she can kick Al's ass, and has no problem telling him off, despite wanting to marry him. As seen in their little "lovers spat" in chapter 78 >D.
Gosh, it's not that easy to piss Al off, especially for a girl. mei is SO the woman for him.
Love it, just love it. xD; Ed must have fun teasing Al, haha. Enough of Al playing matchmaker... Now it's Ed's turn~
love Mei's "I will be taking the room, and I will lock the door!" phrase. Brillaint.
Oh, =O btw, I rp Mei and Winry, and me and my rp Al/Ed based an rp that deviates from the end of this fic. We credited you --it's a private rp on gaia really. If you mind, please tell us xD;. Thank you.
