Day 08 – A book everyone should read at least once

This is an unfair question. :( It's also scary because it's the sort of recommendation that can't come lightly and it entails a lot of responsibility. (Yes, I'm taking it very seriously, why do you ask?)

So, yeah. Let's go with a classic that has a little for everyone:

El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha

Don Quixote has it all. It's also a book about books, just the way I like it. Its most relevant fanfic--the fansequel by someone by the nom de plume of Avellaneda--provoked such anger in Cervantes that it made him write the second part of the book, published in 1615, which includes an angry prologue and several 'Take That's within the narrative against said fanfic. (Then again, in the prologue of his work, Avellaneda had called Cervantes lazy, among other things. Talking about entitled fans, heh.)

Within the book, there is action and mystery and autobiographic tendencies. There's also some exploration of the several facets of romance and, as far a I know, the first Anti-Nice Guy speech in the history of literature is here (Marcela is awesome asserting that she doesn't have to love Grisóstomo back just because she's pretty and he's smitten with her; she doesn't owe him anything, and she just wants to be free and happy). There are also deep philosophical speeches about the human condition in between slapstick comedy and some very, very gag-worthy bits--in the most literal sense.

All in all, Don Quixote is a very layered, very beautiful, very amazing book about a man who went out to the world following a fantasy, found himself, and then came back.

And yes, I do love it.

Es que está tan rodeado de mitos y brumas y hay tantos Estudios Serios hechos por Gente Seria que luego te quedas con la impresión de que si perteneces al rango de gente normal no vas a entenderlo. ;_;

Y eso es algo que nunca entendí de la Gente Seria: una pensaría que la gente que se dedica a la literatura tendría que tratar de hacer que la gente se anime a leer más, no de traumarnos. :/

S-sí. Y luego conoces académicos en persona y hay muchos geniales y adorkables que sí hacen lo posible por divulgar y entusiasmar a todos a que lean, pero también hay otros tan malditamente elitistas... /los truchea

Yo quiero ser de los que hacen que la gente sea feliz leyendo. ;_;

Hay que hacer campaña de que no todos los clásicos son áridos ni toda lo que se escribe actualmente es basura. No recuerdo si lo comenté, pero una vez conocí a alguien en la universidad que clamaba que todo lo que se escribió en el s. XX es basura. Obviamente, la amistad no prosperó. :|b

Y sí. Me quedé con ganas de preguntarle por las vacas sagradas del gremio (Borges y Cortázar, para empezar), pero ya me había caído tan mal por pedante que mejor me fui 8'D

Es awesome. Te recomendo la edición de la RAE que salió para el 500vo aniversario, y que sí leas las notas al pie, que aclaran muchas cosas.

La otra es parte de una colección del Diario El Comercio que está en dos libros y así me enteré que tenía dos partes.

No recuerdo :o Namás me detuve, quizás se me hizo muy pesado. Then again, en mi juventú no tenía tan buen (?) hábito de leer (no que ahora sea mejor, pero '_')

No, si recuerdo bien quería pretender que era culta y se lo pedí a mi papá para leerlo (cuando aún me daba bola D'8) y creo que sí fue el lenguaje.

Sí, me imagino. Igual pasó algo así cuando nos mandaron leer La Divina Comedia y a mí me tocó el infierno (..xD) y la versión que yo tenía estaba en prosa y no en verso y se me hizo más fácil que a mis compañeras. (Justo es parte de la misma colección del Comercio)
